Catch me if you Can
Here I am going to Analyse the opening of 'catch me if you can'
The clip is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaLDyrun_Cc&feature=related
From the opening of the film, you can see that the beginning looks like the film is going to be animated, with the blue background which the characters that are animated with black. From the very beginning it looks at though its sent in an airport where you see the captain and then the cabin crew that walks out, they are wearing a hat this would suggest that they are more upper class and working class. The use of the planes in the background again suggests an airport, they are in white to suggest pure, this also links with the opening titles that are black as it helps to stand out and draws your attention to them when the film starts from the blue background.
When the camera and the shots move from one to another you can then see that there is a large image of a captain of a plain sitting on a chair this is a very large image and it again shows the power over everyone else as the captain is more important.
You can then see a number of very quick shots that are very effective as it catches the eye of the audience that are watching, throughout the whole clip is focusing on this captain that they stand out from the rest of the people passing which are the cabin crew and the people waiting to board the flight.
You then see some writing that says 'Catch ME if you can' the reason i have put me in capital letters is
because on the clip its in white that slowly fads and blows away this looks as though its a cloud, which suggest its in the sky, just like when a plane is flying. you then see a plane pass by which may have the person that they are wanting to catch.
As the plane is passing you can see that the picture changes from the airport to a road this shows that the plane is passing and that its now over the road.
It then shows a holiday destination to show that some time has passed and that the person they may have been trying to catch, linking with the title may now be somewhere that he will never get found.
The use of the different colours shows different connotations, as green would represent, happy, sunny and loving. The colour blue will show pureness, love and happiness. The red and orange, would show danger, heat and powerful.
Throughout the clip it shows to me that someone is trying to get away from someone or something and he is having to pass through lots of different places in order for people not be to able to find him such as police, it looks as though he is being followed as he goes on a plane to a destination, through a working area with the computers, it shows that a long time has passed.

Inception
Here i am going to look at the opening of Inception, By Warner Bros.
This is the link that i have got the clip that i am looking at from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbzv3YN9brc
The first clip that you see is a title that looks very effective with the black background, it says from Christopher Nolan, this is the director of the film, before the film opening has ever started this is shown as its very important, the use of the black background with the black and silver writing looks very effective and it makes the audience think what the opening is going to be like, for me it looks as thought its going to be very sureal, and it also gives a spooky feeling off this may mean there is going to be fighting.
13- 17 seconds
Here you can see that the colours are linking already in the film with a sliver thing spinning around on a table this suggests that its going to be a journey that is going in circles, one thing happens from another, they all link together.
18- 34 seconds
In this time you can see very quick action shots of the different areas in which the camera are, one is the helicopter flying and then its landed. throughout this you can see the titles very quickly coming up, again its all continuous as its the black background with the same colour writing. It is very important to ensure that everything is accurate such as the titles to make sure they are the same as well as the way in which the actors are presented as they have to fit there character perfect, you need to have them wearing the correct clothes for there part. e.g. you would not have a posh, doctor dressed in a tracksuit.
34-37 seconds
Here you can see a very strange thing where they are in a corridor and it looks like a loss of gravity as they are floating around, but it also looks at though they are trying to fight each other but finding it hard, they are wearing a shirt with a waist coat this would suggest they are working class, waiters but they also look quite posh this is defining the stereotype as posh people would not be associated with fighting.
The rest of the clip
When all this has happened you can see that the camera moves from the building onto the city, which is very dark suggesting a dangerous place, the camera then zooms out even further and it comes to say INCEPTION which is black and it looks to have a maze effect around the writing which is silver and the background is black again its linking with the opening in the way that it ends, the reason they do this is to keep the audience on edge and interested in what is going to happen, the use of the very fast edits from one thing to another is to keep the audience on the edge of there seats so that they are focusing on what is going to happen and what will happen next as the opening is not very long, it could show that they are keeping the best parts for the actual film and that they have the fast edits so that the audience will come and watch the film and will remain focused as they are so intense in what happened in the opening.

The Departed Opening Sequence
I am going to analyse another film, the one that I am going to be looking at is The Departed
The link to the video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pci7RS51OfU
01- 09 seconds.
In the first few second you can see that the clip is based in a very overcrowded area, the clip shows a number of people fighting in a street the camera that its being filmed on creates the effect that its been filmed by someone in the street watching with a phone camera or something similar, The people that are fighting are all wearing dark colour clothes, they have dark jackets on and they all look around the same age. As you can see 2 people are fighting and its turns into more and more this would suggest that its a strong community, the people that are fighting may have been in a gang the reason I think this is because its in a build up area and the way the lighting is and the tall building suggests that its not a very nice area.
10- 15 seconds
The camera pans to 2 police men standing in the street and watching what is happening, they do not apper to be bothered about what is happening and they are standing watching, they are wearing a shit that is blue which has connotations of, pureness, happiness, love. The fact that they are wearing the shirts and are police would also suggest that they are working class.
15- 18 seconds
Here the camera again moves to the action where the fighting occured, you now see that there are much more people and the fighting is turning into a riot, everyone is wearing relativity the same clothes and look to be lower class as the live in a built up area, and they are out fighting.
18-19 seconds
The camera moves to a black barrel that has white writing on that says NO this could suggest that they wish this was not happening or it could mean that no your not doing something but they have not listened to the NO and because of this the fighting has started.
20- 25 seconds
Here you can see a number of buses the camera is zoomed in at this point at a black character in a bus, the window has been smashed we can see this from the camera when it starts to zoom out, this is will be from the fighting that has broke out but it could suggest that they want to get to the people in the bus, because of the ethnicity of the characters, as the are black they may think that they should be fighting, black people are represented as evil, nasty, and could also be strong.
25- 32 seconds
Throughout this time you can see that the camera is a close up/ mid shot of all the people that are in the street as the camera is right in the action you can not make out all of the people however it moves to the left and you can see a line of police standing in single file, it looks like they are keeping the fighters from getting to an area.
33- 40 seconds
Here the camera moves out and goes to a birds eye view of the city and zooms into an area that is over sea, whilst the camera is looking over the city, it again has lots of building that are very close to each other and it looks like a area where not many people work as its built up.
41 seconds- 1min 2 seconds
This is a large gap of time and throughout this all you see is a man that is blacked out and you can only see his posture, the man is walking whilst the camera is following him, the man then stops and blows some smoke this suggests that he smokes, the man may be blacked out as it may be highlighting that this is the person that started the fighting of or that he may be a target.
from 1min 3 seconds to 3 mins 8 seconds
In this time you can see that the camera is in a cafe this looks to be an everyday situation with children sitting in there with friends eating, a man come into the cafe and the owner goes over to him and gives him some money this could be money that is owed for him doing a favour etc, they are talking for a long period of time with one of the children looking over interested in what they are talking about further on in this clip you can see that they kid gets some shopping and the man gives him some money this may be his dad or someone the he knows, they kid then walks out of the door and then the clip ends..
There are no titles that run through this scene, unsure if its the correct one, however it is good to look at as it again will give us as a group an understanding into more films to see how they work and how the camera is used effectively to make it look like someone with a camera etc is filming it.

Snatch
In this Analysis I am going to talk about the different use of, Camera, Mise-en-scene, sound and Editing.
The film that I will analyse is Snatch the opening sequence.
This is a link to the beginning of the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89sD6StyzXk
03-08 seconds
In this time you can see that the beginning is in black and white which shows that its old style and that the film may be old fashioned, and the things that are going to happen further on in the film will be violent and disruptive as that is a representation of what it was like back in the old days, when the tv was in back and white. You can also see that some 'Jews' are walking through the door which as a CCTV camera that look as tho its following there every move this again suggest that they are bad people and need to be watched all the time, they again are in black and white and are wearing, a long black coat and hat this is the typical representation of 'Jews'
09-33 seconds
Here you can see that they have stopped one of the men from passing and have stopped him to search him this again suggests that they are nasty people and that they will have something dangerous on them, the man is again in the long black coat and the people that have stopped him are in a white shirt and tie, this suggests that they are much more important as they look more working class as they have a tie on.
33-34 seconds
Here you can see that every move is being watched again by CCTV cameras and when you are watching you are seeing it from the tv screen that someone will be watching, another way that you can tell they are being watched by a CCTV camera is that your looking at a point of view shot that mover from one tv screen to another to show that they are now getting watched through a different CCTV camera.
38- 56 seconds
Here you can see the men waiting to go into the lift, they sort of use an action match shot to show this a the man moves into the lift and the camera again moves tv screen again to show that they are being followed, as they are waiting for the lift they are talking to each other. Nothing much happens in this shot.
56 seconds to 1 min 30
Here you can see that they are in the lift and they are looking at what level floor they are moving to, again they are talking to each other, they are all still wearing back and they look as though they need to talk to someone, they look calm but also as thought they know what they are doing,
1min30 -1min 33
Here you can see that again the camera is following them, through the clip so far the camera has been moving left to the different tv screens, in this shot the camera moves up to a tv screen, this has made an effective shot on the audience as it shows that they may have been in the lift and moved up floors and the camera shows this as the camera moves up.
1min 34- 1 min 38
Here you can see that they have came out of the lift and they are walking to the right hand side, all this time the CCTV cameras are looking at them and they don't know about this they are still in black and white, the camera is a low angle of the 'Jewish' men this may suggest that they are not as powerful and that they are over ruled.
1min 89- 1min 43
Here you can see that the camera again is moving to the right has side this time and they are still being followed, at this point they are being looked at from a long shot in the corridor and they are walking closer to a mid shot and then a close up.
1min 44 - 1min 56
Here you can see that the camera pans to the next CCTV screen and they are still be followed from all aspects, they never come out of the camera view.
1min 57- 2min 16
Here you can see that they are walking again to another lift they then press the button it looks as though they will be going ever higher in the floors.
The titles
Throughout the opening you can see that it is always bring up the titles of the Director, the editor, the actors etc, The titles are in a very plain text and a very easy to read and suit the opening at they are in back and white, you can see that the titles have a black box around them that then has the plain text inside which is like a grey colour.
This will help us when we are making our opening as we should be able to look back to see how effective the opening of professional films are and to see how we can make our titles look effective with the editing software that we have to offer. In the films that I have analysed so far and the films that Reece and Katie have analysed we have noticed that all the titles suit the films that they have created perfectly, such as this film Snatch, the opening is in back and white and so are the titles, another example would be that if you were making a horror and there was lots of blood and violence based in the opening you would expect to see lots of violent, spooky, red writing for the blood as the titles as it would suit the opening sequence of the film that you have created.
If we ensure that everything that we are going to do link perfectly with the Genra that we are doing which is Crime, the film at the end once we have edited it, should look good and fit with the film that we had made, the reason for this again is so that the audience are always getting reminded of what is happening and what the film is about,
Representation for our film
As I made a list earlier and posted on the blog, I now am going to say what representations we will be using in our film.
We want to have a detective, that is actually the murder, however he is been seen at the detective at the beginning, then he at the end is seen as the murder.
The representation of this person would be that he is strong, powerful and over ruling
There will also be someone that is getting interviewd by the detective- who is actually the murder.
The representations of the man getting investigated would be, strong, unknown
The woman what we would like to have is a blond, thin woman.
The representation of this would be that they are, friendly, flirty and pure
Here I have again stated some representation that are in the media, the reason that they have these representations are so that people that are watching can clearly see what they are going to be like before you even meet them.

Representation
I am going to say what all the representations and later, we will say what representations will apply to our film making when we have a more clear idea and the script writing comes into place.
Disability on tv
physically disabled
the outsider
strange/odd
not able
Ethnicity on tv
white people - strong, pure, heroes
Black people - strange, poor
Asian people- inelegant, nerdish, love technology
Indian People- large families, poor
Sexuality on tv
Gay men- camp, feminine, funny, attractive
Lesbians Women- bitchy, haters of men
Class on tv
upper class- rich, posh, snobby, cleaver
Middle class- normal, well presenter
Working class- not intelligent, help people
lower class- criminals, bad parents and people in general
Age on tv
children- pure
Teens- moody, lazy, hate school
20'2 and 30's- money, love, attractive
Middle age- not attractive, uncool
Elderly- not important, ill, confused, powerless
Regional Identity on tv
Scottish- alcohol, money, outdoors, violent
Irish- dim, not intelligent
English- football, rich, posh, happy, London, snobby
Gender on tv
Male- Hero, tall, strong, brave, usually hands on, aggressive, work to provide family
Female, pink, house work, pure, innocent, flirty.
As you can see in the Media these people are represented as theses types of people, however we all know this is not always the truth, in the film that we are going to produce the opening for we need to consider this to make sure that it looks effective and works with the genra and the representation of people.

instututions
when we were looking at some possible film ideas for the opening of our film we found that most of the films that we looked at where by Warner Bros. As lots of the films that we had been watching where by this we thought what we would get a good understanding of what our audience think and the public, In our Questionnaire which you can see on the blog, we have asked a questionnaire saying what is your favorable film is, by asking this question will help to see what illustration they are e.g. Warner Bros. Some of the films that people have been putting down we have looked at as openings to help decide how we will make ours, as we have seen some of these it helps already, if not we can look into seeing what the average illustration is from the films the audience has give us.

Questionnaire
Here you can see that we have made a questionnaire to go along with our research we are going to print some of theses copy's off and give them to some friends and family and get there opinions on some possible ideas of which genre they like and we have also put in a question about our plot and the idea of the final idea, we have asked if they like the idea and if they would change or add/ improve anything to the idea that we have in mind. We are more that happy for you to post a comment about what you think of our ideas and if you have anything else in mind along the same idea again please feel free to let us know your opinions.

The Italian Job Opening
As you can see throughout the entire opening you can only see the camera focusing on the most important parts of the opening. Around the main important parts all you can see is black this suggests that it is wanting you to see the most important part. At the very beginning it is showing you the picture that starts off very small and gradually gets bigger it then is shown in yellow and when its expanding it changes colour to the original coloures.
Throughout the opening it uses diffrent camera shots such as zoom in, close up, long shot, tracking shot, and more the use of diffrent shots show that they know what they are doing, it also shows us the audience that we are actually involved in the film and we are seeing everything that they want us to see. When the camera has a close up its usually used to show the emotion or something very important in the clip.
When you see this all it looks like is some thing in the river, this is a in town area this suggests that it is working class and that there is lots of people in the area. The use of the colours also show working class as it is very dull and dark colours such as gray, brown these are all negative colours, this means that they are not happy and peaceful which you would think yellow and white.
Gray suggest dull, sadness, danger
Brown suggests, danger, boring
You also see that the titles are also in these colours and a very dark yellow, this means that its assosiated with the film, this has been well thought-out as it all links together this means that the titles link in with the film to make it look more professional. The titles are in very plain text, such as Arial, this means that it is easily readable and clear for the audience to see when they are beginning to watch the film.

Audience
The audience that we would be looking at when doing a crime film would be very similar to films that have been produced by company's such as Warmer Bros. They would have a specific audience for each genera of films ranging from romantic film to action and Horror/ Crime films.
The audience that we would be looking at would be aimed at people that are intrested in Crime films, interested in seeing the action of death and danger and what happens before the build up, how the film is actually presented.
The target audience that we are going to have and aim our crime film at would be people that are interested in the film and the opening of what we are going to produce:
The average age of the people that would come and watch the film would be people in the age group of 18- 35 and 36- 64 the reason that we have came up with this age group is because it would have an age limit on it of 18. When we have been looking at the audience you can see that they are adults of all diffrent ages. This would also link with the genera of the films as the target audience life style would be for the classes we have chosses would be, Managers would ware suits and ties, as would people in the film they would be waring the same type of clothes.
On the social Stratification table the people that would be very likely to come and watch our film would be people that are in the social group of C1, B and A. This means the people would be the lower middle class, the middle class and the upper/upper middle class. This basically means that people that have enough income to be able to afford to go to the cinema to pay the money to watch a film would be the people that have a good income.
Social Group Social Class Occupation Type
A Upper/Upper Middle Class Directors ect
B Middle Class Managers ect
C1 Lower Middle Class Shop Managers etc
C2 Skilled Working Class Skilled Manual Workers
D Working Class Manual Workers
E Substance level Low Paid or Unemployed

Compleating a Blog about the following:
In the research tasks that we are doing over the next few weeks we need to ensure that we are completing tasks during the weeks of researching we need to have a blog on the following:
Audience - here i will write a blog on the audience that we as a group have decided will best suit our genera. this will include the age of the people that are more likely to suit the film, i will also say weather the audience is more likely to be male or female or both this will be completed very soon. After today's lesson once we have decided on the final Genera and what it may include.
Representation- He we will have different representations that will be in our final film. If the place we choose is in a dark and lonely area this would represent that the film may be based on a horror or something that will include fighting and mysterious problems that may occur... this again will have a bolg post once we have discussed the areas that we may film and how we want the film to look.
Institutions- We have a opening that we include on our opening of the films that we have done so far this is the dynamite Kitty Studios.... we are going to make this look more serious to make it more effective this will be posted onto the bolg as soon as this has been implemented.
We also need to devise a schedule for over the next few weeks that we are researching about possible ideas.... during the lessons I will aim to have researched about the above, what audiences suit our genre and what similar films audiences are. this will help the group to decide who we need to aim this at and how we could make it effective.
I am also going to look at the representations, such as the lighting and what this creates for the audience, i will look at the use of clothing and how this would effect the final out come etc. We could devise a questionnaire that we could ask people to fill in once we have decided on our audience. By having a questionnaire it would help us decide about the possible representation as we could be asking what they feel having dark lighting would create for them as the audience etc.
Over the Weekend Me, Reece and Katie are going to discuss more about the films that we have been talking about in the lesson today. We are now going to decide on the final genera on Monday the likley hood is that we are going to do something based around a drama such as a horror or something involving Crime.
The films and Tv shows that we have been discussing are, Sherlock and Nighmare on elms street, the remake. this shows lots of effective shots and editing throughout. It also will help us decide on the place that we are going to do it etc.
I will be posting a blog over the weekend discussing more about possible ideas
Thanks

Opening sequence of "Dawn of the Dead"
We have been asked by our teacher Mr Earl if we can analyse a film opening and write about the representation that the opening gives off "Dawn of the Dead" is the film that I have been allocated.
http://vimeo.com/32365995 - this is a link to the opening of the opening of the film.
The opening of the film is designed to keep the audience (us) interested in the film. the opening sequence is very effective as it is trying to be horrifying and horrific imagery, the reason for this is to shock the audience and make them feel scared and interested in watching on at the same time. The technical areas that the film uses is Mise-en-scene, editing, camera work and sound theses are used very effectively throughout the opening I will explain now:
When you see the first 2 seconds you can see that it starts will a high angle that is looking at the trees and the birds that are flying by, this would represent a nice peaceful and relaxing place. the noise of the birds created a soft, relaxing feel. The effect this has on the audience is that its a nice happy place and a nice, relaxing film, however the lighting starts to go very dark and dull this creates a feel to the audience that the film is not what the first thought and that it may be a horror.
The next few seconds after this shows a black screen with some credits that are written in red, the use of red symbolism bold, death and danger, it can also represent love and piece. It shows a clear picture of the credits and then it moves to the writing sweeping out and moving into lines that look like blood this again represent death.
You the see a number of shots that flicker through in a matter of seconds ranging from people bowing down to seeing someone with blood all over there face, this can show that people are under supervision and that they will do what they are told or they may face the frighting thought of being hurt with the blood. throughout the opening there are a number of graphic clips that cross cut with the credits reminding the audience that this is a horror and that danger is always lurking around, the camera is showing a number of shots of the zombies that have blood all over there face that suggests that they have been killed.
the editing is also used very effectively as we know you can see a number of very fast edits that flicker from one shot to another this would represent that danger is always there and someone or something could happen at any time. Throughout the narrative voice you keep hearing the saying "WE DONT KNOW" this would suggest that there is more that one person that is trying to help fight of the zombies but they are just getting over powered. There is also non diegetic sound that is being plaid when the man is talking by the sound of his voice it sounds as though he is not comfortable with speaking and that he is being pressured into doing so. They are playing an instrument during this which sounds like a guitar this is very unusual and is maybe trying to hint at the fact that everything that is happening is for a reason.
The Mise-en-scene in the clip shows a variety of different representations as you see people that are in a big crowd and they do not have many pieces of clothes on, this would suggest that they are poor and are in a lower class range where as when the man is talking you see that he has got a brown suit on this would suggest that he is posh and that he is working class. The use of the lighting in the opening would also suggest that the film could be a horror as it is very dark lighting and is very mystic.
The setting of the area again is very horrific with the fire and the flames this suggested that it is a deserted place, that there has been lots of fights and dangerous things that have been happening. This would maybe link with the fact the that zombies have been and have destroyed the place where people have been living.

The Final Project
In the last few lessons we have been having some discussions with the class and with the teacher Mr Earl about the things that we need to include when coming to do the final project, we have been thinking about possible ideas and things that we can do in the groups that we are working in.
We have also been introduced to a number of tasks and deadlines that we will have to meet and have to a high quality standard in order to reach our target grade. We have been looking on the intranet and using other sources to find information (Research) about what opening sequences look like in other films and how we can implement theses to what we are going to make. We have been assigned a task that we will do for homework, we are going to analyse a clip that we have been given from the teacher or to get one of our own the clip i am going to look and focus on is "Dawn of the dead" i will talk about a number of things such as the effects of the titles etc for example what the represent and how this effects us the audience and what it makes us think.
For example if the titles where bold and red that look dangerous we would think the film may be about danger and or death.
